Description:
Mountainmint is a native perennial that spreads by rhizomes; unlike true mints, this false mint is not invasive. Root pruning in the spring will help contain its spread. The dark green leaves have strong spearmint-like aroma when crushed. Summer flowers are a pink two-lipped tubular style in flat terminal clusters with silvery fringeless bracts at the base of each cluster. These bracts give the appearance of the plant being dusted in white powdery snow. Its leaves can be used to make a mild tea. Mountainmint is not drought tolerant; it prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils and does great along the edge of a woodland. Mountainmint has been named the 2025 Perennial Plant of the Year by the PPA.
