The fiddleheads and fronds emerge coppery orange, giving rise to its name of Autumn Brilliance, even though this color can be found in spring and summer! These fronds mature to a lovely deep green and might return to the coppery color after the first fall frost. The spores become evident in fall, when they are produced in a brilliant red color. This fern is a great woodland and shade garden plant, especially when the soil is kept evenly moist. When mulched and established, this fern can tolerate drier soil locations. The texture of this fern is an excellent contrast to other shade plants, such as hostas and coral bells. Fern fronds can be used in fresh floral arrangements.

Other Names: Autumn Fern; Japanese Shield Fern
