Wild ginger features large leaves up to 7 inches wide. It spreads by rhizomes, making it good for naturalization and as a ground cover. Wild Ginger will grow under walnut trees. It loves moist soils and can only tolerate drought experiences for short periods after establishment. Wild Ginger has brown-purple flowers hiding underneath the large leaves that emit sweet fragrances for the pollinators. Rhizomes have a ginger scent and used o be eaten as a substitute for culinary ginger.
