Summersweet Ruby Spice is a nativar, deciduous shrub that is found in a variety of soils and locations. Common to wet areas, it will not tolerate drying out but will tolerate clay soils. The shrub has an oval habit that is upright and flat-topped, making it an excellent option for naturalizing a location. Its lustrous green leaves turn yellow in fall. Prune as needed in late winter. Deep pink bottlebrush-like flower spikes spark a debate about its fragrance. Some thing it is reminiscent of spring lilacs although not as sweet and others detect root beer.
