Latin Name: Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks'
Height: 5 - 6 feet
Spread: 2- 3 feet
Sunlight: Full Sun
Bloom Time: August to November
Hardiness Zone: 3-9
Description:
A variety of native Big Bluestem, Blackhawks features upright green foliage with smoky purple tones. Deep purple flowers give way to seed heads that emerge in late summer atop strong stalks, and the golden seeds add a great color contrast. Although an excellent addition to restoration or naturalized gardens, Blackhawks can also provide screening due to its upright, clump-forming habit. It will attract birds who may use it for nesting materials or feast on the seeds. It is a perfect perennial option for those that love annual Purple Fountain Grass! Cut back to the ground in late winter. It can be used for fresh or dried cuttings.
Attracts: Birds
