Apple Slices Spigelia features dark wine red tubular flowers with a star shaped tip. This tip and the insides of the tubes are yellow. These flowers can be cut for fresh enjoyment. They are also self-cleaning, no need to deadhead. Foliage is a lovely dark green and wedge shaped, found on stems occurring in upright clumps. Spigelias perform best in rich, moist soils that are well-drained and in full sun to part shade conditions. More flowers occur when planted in full sun. They will tolerate full shade or soggy soils. Spigelia is native to Southeastern United States, including Kentucky, but is not native to Indiana.
